First Father's Day

It's my first Father's day. I'm 8 weeks into this and learning a lot as I go.

I have a lot to live up to. There are some amazing father's in my life. First and foremost, my own father.

My father has been a constant source of inspiration for me. He's an incredibly intelligent, compassionate man. He was there for me at every single important event in my life. There has not been a time that I haven't been able to look for him in the crowd and not see him. I pray that I can be that for Atticus. I pray that he can take for granted that his father will be present in the big moments. I pray that I will put him first above my own wants and needs.

Second is my own brother:

My brother has been a stay at home dad for the last couple of years and has done a bang up job of raising two amazing kids. The lesson I hope to learn from him is to engage constantly with your kids. My brother sings, talks, reads, and plays with his two children day in and day out. He has created a sense of wonder in them that I hope to instill in my own son. I love that my nephew makes up songs and stories.

Third is my brother-in-law, Chris. I have had the good fortune of watching Chris raise his children for the past 10 years. What I love about watching Chris parent is that he finds ways to match his children's interests. Sometimes it comes easy with the kids loving Star Wars, but many times Chris is just as passionate about a television show, or ballet, or being a 'tickle monster'. He engages with his children however his children most need/want. I want to engage with my son in every level that he finds interesting, not just the levels that I find interesting.

There are many other men who deserve mention as great fathers that are inspirations to me, but these have been my building blocks. My foundation of knowledge.

I pray that I will be a good father to my son. I pray that he will have the opportunities that I had/have. I pray he will grow up respectful, kind, and caring. The enormity of the challenge of fatherhood is daunting, but I have never been more excited for a task.
